The 74th District Needs Shirl LaBarre

Hayward's Shirl LaBarre, a Navy Veteran and community leader has announced that she will run for the 74th Assembly District Seat, currently held by Rep. Gary Sherman (D-Port Wing). In her announcement, LaBarre said her top priority is getting the state back on the right track by helping businesses in Northern Wisconsin create and retain good-paying jobs.

"As a small business owner, I understand what it takes to create jobs and there's no doubt our state government could do better," LeBarre said. "The key to getting more quality jobs in our area is less government intrusion, not more. We need to cut through bureaucratic red-tape, reduce the tax burden for small businesses and homeowners, and reform our health care system to get our economy back on track."

LaBarre has owned and operated Mr. Ed's Plumbing in Hayward with her husband Ed since 2001. Along with serving two terms on the Hayward Unified School District Board, 3 years as vice-president, LaBarre has held numerous positions on councils and boards in northern Wisconsin.

She is active in the Northland Area Builders Association, formerly serving as Executive Officer. She's also worked hard as a member of the local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Salvation Army's Board for Elizabeth Home of Hope fundraising committee (house for homeless in Sawyer County), Hayward Foundation for Educational Enrichment, Jacyees and the American Business Women's Association.

Prior to her local community service, LaBarre served her country in the U.S. Navy.

"I have always tried hard to give back to a community and country that has been so great to my family and me," LaBarre said. "It's clear we need a breath of fresh air in Madison and that is why I want to put my experience to work for everyone in the 74th as their representative in Madison."

Beside job creation and retention, LaBarre listed fighting an over-burdening tax climate, reducing health care costs, improving our educational system, and preserving our natural resources as the cornerstones of her campaign.

"We have a lot of work to do and I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and tackle the important issues facing my friends and neighbors in northern Wisconsin," LaBarre added.

Shirl has been happily married to her husband Ed for 18 years. They have one son. Along with working at the family business, Shirl is also helping local businesses set up accounting services that suit their operations.

The 74th Assembly District includes all of Ashland, Bayfield, and Douglas counties, as well as much of Sawyer County, including the City of Hayward, and Villages of Couderay, Radisson and Winter . The general election for the 74th will be held on November 4, 2008.

Shirl Addresses Northland Area Builders Association
Posted 7/29/08

I am writing to make you aware of my opponents voting record on some key issues that helped make my decision to run and I hope will help you decide who to vote for!

AB 260 (Assembly Bill #260) on Crime Mr. Sherman voted NO against giving employers the ability to deny employment to convicted felons in order to protect their customers.

SB 40 A (Senate Bill #40) on Crime Mr. Sherman voted NO against giving people legal protection for an individual who uses force to protect his/her home and family from intruders.

AB 67 on Economic Development Mr. Sherman voted NO against providing over $23 million per year in credits aimed at expanding and enhancing worker training skills.

AB 346 on Energy Mr. Sherman voted NO against allowing the development and construction of nuclear power plants in Wisconsin, which means we maintain the current energy status quo and hurts the state in developing clean, reliable energy.

AJR 17 Government Reform Mr. Sherman voted NO against the Constitutional Amendment to require Photo ID before casting a ballot.

AB 205 Government Reform Mr. Sherman voted NO against giving the legislature the ability to vote to approve off-reservation casinos.

SB40 A Health Care (one of my favorites!) Mr. Sherman voted NO against making Health Savings accounts tax deductible, leaving Wisconsin one of 4 states that tax HSAs.

SB40 A Health Care Mr. Sherman voted NO against tax incentives for Wisconsin businesses to implement workplace wellness programs that have been successful in lowering health care costs.

AB 806 Immigration Mr. Sherman voted NO against requiring that English be the official state language of Wisconsin.

SS SB1- Immigration Mr. Sherman voted YES in favor of giving illegal aliens in-state tuition to both UW and WI Tech Colleges.

SB40 A Property Tax Mr. Sherman voted NO against a three year property tax freeze that would allow for growth.

SB40 A School Safety Mr. Sherman voted NO against a new grant program providing $10 million for local school safety grants.

SB40 A School Safety Mr. Sherman voted NO against giving local school boards the power to keep convicted felons out of our public schools and away from our children.

SB40 A Transportation Mr. Sherman voted NO against establishing a statutory firewall to protect Transportation Dollars from being raided.

I have listed just 14 votes out of 33 that I have, these 14 fired me up and some made me down right angry, (the others were not much better). I only hope it will light a fire under many if not all of you! You see in order to beat an incumbent it takes time, money, effort, and people that will speak out. I need all of this, I am working hard to show that I am the person to properly represent the 74th District!
I wanted to share some of this with you so when you talk politics you have the real scoop. Many times we forget to take a look at the voting records of our Representative's, I think they count on that. They will only bring up the bills (or their vote for a certain bill) that will make you "feel warm" when they are chatting with you but don't be fooled, while we are working a couple of jobs, worrying about our families, what groceries cost, gas, how are we going to pay the heating bill this year, not to even mention health care, they are voting ways we don't know about, and that we would never imagine!
Mr. Sherman has been in office for 10 years, over the last 4 years I have watched him carefully, and I have NOT witnessed any change in his politics at all. I need your help to become your State Representative and I am asking for it right now! Please call me when you can, I am always available. Many don't know that a few dollars helps a campaign, putting up signs, sending in editorials to local media, making phone calls, or many other important tasks help, so please call me! If you want to check out any of the representatives voting records you can do so @ www.legis.state.wi.us and I encourage you all to do so!

Thank you and I look forward to seeing each of you on the campaign trail!

Surprise! Doyle Hikes Property Taxes
MADISON - Property tax hikes being proposed by Governor Doyle and the Democrats amount to an assault on Wisconsin taxpayers, said Mark Jefferson, Executive Director of the Republican Party of Wisconsin.

"The Governor and the Democrats want to allow property tax hikes of nearly double that of last year," said Jefferson. "I don't remember them pushing this as part of their agenda during the election season."

The nonpartisan Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance is projecting a property tax increase of 5.6 percent on bills to be mailed in December if the Democrats property tax hikes are enacted. The last two years saw increases of 2.3 and 3.3 percent. Democrats also want to repeal the qualified economic offer (QEO) that helps local school districts control costs.

"Wisconsin property taxpayers have every reason to wonder who Doyle and the Democrats are standing with if it isn't them," Jefferson said.

A recent article in the Janesville Gazette suggests the answer. When asked about Doyle's performance, Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) President Stan Johnson declared, "He hasn't let us down."

"Once again, a clear difference is being drawn between the two parties," Jefferson said. "Democrats continue to push for higher taxes and more government spending on behalf of the special interests that elected them. Republicans, by contrast, will continue to stand with Wisconsin's property taxpayers."

FBI investigates donations to Doyle
By CARY SPIVAK and STEVE SCHULTZE cspivak@journalsentinel.com

Kenosha businessman Dennis Troha late Friday abruptly withdrew from the $808 million tribal casino project on which he's invested years and millions of dollars.

The surprise move came as the FBI was investigating the thousands in campaign donations the Troha family has made to Gov. Jim Doyle. Federal law gives Doyle veto power over any off-reservation casino in the state. Sources said the FBI launched its probe of Troha and family members earlier this year.

Criminal defense lawyer Franklyn Gimbel, who is representing Troha in the matter, declined to discuss specifics of the investigation, though he confirmed that he has talked to federal prosecutors on behalf of Troha.

Conservative Comebacks to Liberal Lies II

"Bush lied about WMDs."
The fact that liberals continue to perpetuate the Big Lie that "Bush Lied" despite all the evidence to the contrary, in my opinion is inexcusable. Virtually every leading Democrat from Biden to Gore to Clinton all agreed Saddam had WMDs and that force was necessary to disarm him. This lie of the Left is dangerous because when one of the two major political parties in our country is constantly criticizing the Commander and Chief and accusing him of lying and abusing enemy detainees, their public statements are ultimately disseminated around the world as media propaganda which further enflames and emboldens the "Arab street."

The Jihadists see this discord as a divide that they can manipulate. The Left is fully invested in our defeat in Iraq. The stakes could not be any higher. If we lose in Iraq- which would most certainly happen if we cut and run as the Democrats are advocating- the Jihadists around the world will only strengthen their resolve. We know that they prey on weakness and submission. We cannot allow this to happen. The fact that liberals in our country are indirectly aiding and abetting the enemy is outright treasonous in many regards. Conservatives need to be constantly reminding Americans how damaging to our national security the lie that "Bush Lied" is.

Proposed Doyle Tax Hikes Cross $1 Billion Mark
2/12/2007
Contact - Senator Scott Fitzgerald,
(608) 266-5660

Bad news for taxpayers continues as governor proposes yet another huge tax increase

[Madison, Wisc....] A new week started off on a bad note for Wisconsin's middle class families, as they learned this morning of Governor Doyle's latest plan to raise their taxes. This time, the governor is proposing a new tax on gasoline providers that will cost Wisconsin drivers almost $300 million over the next two years. This new tax is the equivalent of an 8.5 cents increase in the state's gas tax.

"The budget Governor Doyle will present to the legislature and the people of Wisconsin on Tuesday will raise taxes by more than $1 billion," said Senate Republican Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R - Juneau). "There is literally nobody in Wisconsin who will be able to avoid paying higher taxes under the budget proposed by the governor and supported by Senate Democrats."

In addition to the more than $1 billion in tax increases the governor will include in his budget, Senate Democrats are proposing a scheme to shift more than $3 billion in sales taxes on the backs of Wisconsin families.

"If you're sick, if you drive, if you own or rent a home, if you smoke, if you visit our state as a tourist, or if you buy anything at all in the state of Wisconsin, the Democrats in Madison want to raise your taxes," Fitzgerald said. "Our tax burden is one of the ten worst in the country and Wisconsin's middle class families can't take any more. These tax increases must be stopped."

Fitzgerald noted that the governor's budget would use the revenues generated by more than $1 billion in new taxes to fund new and expanded government programs that will increase the role government plays in people's lives and take control away from individuals and families.

"The governor wants to expand the government's reach into every aspect of people's lives from the cradle to the grave, and he wants Wisconsin's middle class families to pick up the tab," Fitzgerald said. "The people of Wisconsin are fed up with high taxes. Our families and our economy cannot afford the budget Governor Doyle will announce on Tuesday night."
